Rules for Impact Players

  • There cannot be more than four overseas players in the Playing XI for the Impact Player to be an Indian.
  • If a team introduces an overseas player as an Impact Player in a match, a 5th overseas player cannot be brought on as a substitute.
  • During toss time, teams must select 4 substitutes along with the playing X1 and only one substitute can be used as an impact player.
  • The captain will nominate the impact player
  • During an over, an Impact Player can be introduced before the start of the innings, after the over has ended, after the wicket has fallen, or after the batter has retired.
  • If a Player is replaced by an Impact Player (“Replaced Player”), he or she cannot participate in the remainder of the match or return as a substitute fielder.
  • BCCI confirms that Impact Players cannot serve as captains.
  • It is possible for an Impact Player to take the place of a retired batter who will be allowed to come later if necessary.
  • It is permissible for both teams to use one Impact Player per match, but it is not mandatory. It is up to the teams to decide whether to use the Impact Player.
  • In the event that a player gets injured while fielding mid-over, he cannot participate in the match if Impact Player is introduced to replace him.
  • During a match, a substitute fielder may substitute for an injured impact player only if the umpires are satisfied.
  • Substitutes may not bowl or serve as captains.
  • For the batting and fielding teams, penalty time will apply to the substitute off the field.

Moreover, the BCCI confirmed the date for the IPL 2023 players auction and released the list of registered players.

The IPL said in a note sent to franchises on Thursday that it will introduce a tactical/strategic concept from the 2023 season, which will allow one substitute player per team to take an active part in matches.

Regulations pertaining to the same will be issued shortly.”

IPL 2023 Impact Player Rule: What is it?

A ‘Impact Player’ rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player midway through the game to adjust to changing conditions/playing conditions and to replace a non-performing player.

  • Along with their starting XI, each team can name four substitutes
  • Before the first ball of the match is bowled, all teams should announce their four substitutes.
  • One of those four players can replace any player in the Playing XI
  • In contrast to the concussion substitute or the ‘Super Sub’ (explained below), the Impact Player can bowl and bat.
  • However, the change can only be made before the 14th over.
  • The XI should not have more than four overseas players.
  • Impact Players can be introduced only at the end of an over in progress and are eligible to bat. Only 11 players can bat in any situation.
  • There is no requirement to move.

In 2005 and 2006, under the Supersub system, the substitute played the same role as the player he replaced, which meant he could not bat if the original player was already dismissed, and could only bowl the remaining overs from the replaced player’s quota.

BBL in Australia tried – and ditched – the X-Factor rule, which allowed teams to replace a player from their starting XI after the halfway point (ten overs in a full game) of the first innings.
