In the past two seasons, SRH has struggled a lot in the IPL. In the 2021 and 2022 seasons, SRH failed to reach the playoffs. In order to prepare for the new season, SRH appointed Brain Lara as head coach and Aiden Markram as captain.
Prior to the IPL 2023 auction, SRH retained only 12 players and released others, including captain Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran, Jagadeesha Suchith, and Romario Shepherd.
